Our goal was not simply to help good people who are struggling. Our commitment was to solve the problem—of suicide, of struggle, of suffering, and of despair. And Struggle Well was designed to allow us to take everything we’ve learned over the last nine years and bring it to the world at scale.
Struggle Well is a training program focused on the first responder community. Struggle Well is five days’ worth of training that looks at and helps people understand the science of Posttraumatic Growth, the philosophy of struggling well, and helps them choose—once they understand what those pieces are—how they want to start deploying that in their own lives.
People start to talk primarily about struggles in their personal life, and you just start to see this level of liberation, where people can finally breathe. And they don’t have to act like they have everything figured out—because nobody has everything figured out.
This training’s about you. And this training is for you—not for your department, not for your chief, supervisor, anybody else. It’s about you.
These careers, this work on the front line of our society, does change you. But that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. It can be a great thing. It can help you grow. It can help you learn. To police well, you have to be well.
Everybody experiences struggle, and there’s more than one way to navigate through the struggle to the other side. And once we do that, we start to change culture.
Just an eye-opener to understand that there is another way to think about it. Everything, everything that was weighing me down had just shifted up. Everything—it lifted off my shoulders.
Everybody deserves the opportunity to live a great life. And when you make that possible, the world is a hell of a lot better place—for everybody’s sake.
In order to do better in the lives of those we love and care about, we have to start by taking care of ourselves. I don’t know that you can truly quantify the ripple effect that this community can have on our country if all of them were to experience Struggle Well.
