The Hero’s Journey | Refusal Of The Call PTG Playlist

June 3, 2025

Refusal of The Call:  This is the moment when the hero resists the invitation to adventure, held back by fear, doubt, a sense of unworthiness, or a desire to return to life as it was before. It’s a natural pause before confronting the unknown and embracing change.

  1. “I Keep Forgettin’” – Michael McDonald
This song captures the internal struggle of clinging to the past and resisting change. In the context of posttraumatic growth, it reflects how people often deny the finality of loss or trauma, avoiding the painful truth that calls them toward healing.
  2. “Don’t Wanna Fight” – Alabama Shakes
A raw expression of exhaustion and inner conflict, this track embodies the refusal to engage with life’s challenges. It mirrors the moment when a warrior or survivor feels too overwhelmed to confront what lies ahead, hesitating on the edge of transformation.
  3. “Let You Down” – NF
NF’s confessional lyrics reveal the crushing weight of self-doubt and fear of failure. This aligns with the refusal stage, where individuals fear disappointing themselves and others, retreating from the call to change because they don’t believe they’re capable or worthy.
  4. “Private Hell” – Alice in Chains
This song paints the picture of someone trapped in their own darkness, unwilling or unable to reach out. It reflects the isolating nature of trauma, where the hero declines the invitation to face their wounds, choosing instead to remain in familiar pain.
  5. “Save Me” – Jelly Roll
A desperate plea for rescue, this track illustrates the refusal to take that first step toward healing, waiting instead for someone else to fix the hurt. It reflects the mindset of someone stuck at rock bottom, resistant to the call because hope feels impossible.
  6. “Crawling” – Linkin Park
A visceral portrayal of inner torment, this anthem embodies the refusal to confront personal demons. Through Boulder Crest’s lens, it highlights how trauma survivors often feel powerless against their past, initially rejecting the idea that growth or peace is even possible.
  7. “Love Is a Losing Game” – Amy Winehouse
This mournful reflection on loss and hopelessness speaks to the fear of further pain. In the refusal stage, it represents how some avoid new beginnings and healing because love, trust, and vulnerability seem too risky after trauma.
  8. “Boulder to Birmingham” – Emmylou Harris
Grieving the loss of a loved one, Harris’s song represents the deep sorrow that causes a hero to turn away from life’s next chapter. It captures the reluctance to move forward when the weight of grief feels unbearable, a moment of pause before growth can take root.
  9. “The Sound of Silence” – Simon & Garfunkel (performed by Disturbed)
This haunting rendition amplifies the theme of isolation and voiceless suffering. It resonates with the refusal of the call, symbolizing the silence many hold in the wake of trauma, avoiding the confrontation of their pain and the journey toward posttraumatic growth.

These songs reflect the very real struggle of the Refusal of the Call — a natural, human response to pain, fear, and uncertainty. At Boulder Crest Foundation, we believe it’s in acknowledging these moments that true strength is found, turning adversity into growth, and struggle into a new path forward.
