Transcript:

When we look at our mental health system, whether it’s for veterans or for society at large, what is clear is that system’s not working. That our approach is failing so many different people who are struggling in so many different ways.

And what we believe at the root of that failure is the inability for people who are trying to help other people. To build relationships filled with safety, trust, and connection with those folks. And what we focus on here more than anything is creating an environment that is conducive to people’s growth, and healing, and wellness and forward momentum.

And I think what we’ve innovated upon is what Carl Rogers did in the sixties, which is this client-centered psychotherapy model that says when we’re working with somebody, you have to have three things: empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence. Which means that the person who is helping has to be aligned. Has to be well. Has to be in a good place to be able to meaningfully help somebody else.

And I think what we’ve pioneered in a lot of respects is actually returning mental health to its roots, which is the recognition that when someone’s struggling, we need to meet them where they are and focus on building a connected relationship as opposed to trying to fix them in some mystical or magical way.
