You know, the foundation of everything of Posttraumatic Growth is kind of built on trust and connection.
And I really struggled personally with this concept because I felt like even in my own home there wasn’t the trust and connection there. So how the heck am I going to go out into the regular world and create this trust and connection?
And it really started with me listening to myself and not lying to myself — but then listening to the people in my home, and deeply, right? Shutting up and actually listening to what they had to say instead of trying to solve their problems.
To be attentive to their needs. To be patient, right? Because I know my path is how I’m traveling — that’s my speed of travel. But it might not be my 16-year-old son’s.
And to really be patient and sit back. And to be humble, right? Just because I’m older than somebody or I’m their parent does not mean that I know what they’re going through.
And to be completely open to hearing what they had to say. And that was really where my foundation of trust and connection began — was in my own home.
And once that felt good, then I felt a whole lot better about going into my workplace or my place of worship to also do that.
It started for me in the home.
And this is how I live the life that I deserve.
