Greg Morin | Who Am I?

Transcript:

One of the beautiful things about story—the story phase of posttraumatic growth—is we get to write our own story. We get to build a story that is meaningful, purposeful, intentional, and of our own decision.

We’re not tied to an identity because we have a certain job. We’re not tied to an identity because we play a certain role in life. It’s about understanding who I am at my very core, understanding what are the things that are most important to me, what are the principles that I want to live.

And not just what are the principles that I want to live, but what do those look like in action?

When we think about the values exercise that we do under the quotes from David Rico—about we must have our values aligned both in theory and in action—the things that we cherish the most have to be seen in our actions. If I say I’m a family man and my family is the most important aspect of my life—family is number one for me—my actions better support that.

So when we think about this existential question of “Who am I?” we have to dive deep because it’s an opportunity. And that’s why it’s important to ask the hard questions: Who am I? Why am I here? Where do I belong?

I get to write this story and create this narrative of my life. I get to choose the nature of my life, because it’s the only story that I’ve got. The journey of posttraumatic growth provides us with an opportunity to create new and positive, forward-looking stories about our lives.

And in the process of doing that, we get to reflect on all the things that we’ve experienced. We get to reflect on and find the answers, and cultivate answers in our lives to the biggest questions that we’ve come across.

So as you go your way and write your story, as you lean into this phase of story, continue to ask: Who am I? What is meaningful to me?

In all the communities we serve, that’s one of the biggest questions that gets asked—because it’s about understanding me. And when I understand me, and I get to answer those questions about who I am, I can write this story intentionally, consistently, purposefully, and meaningfully.
