In this chapter, the authors review the literature examining posttraumatic growth (PTG) and associated constructs in individuals with cancer. To do so, they conducted a search of the PsycLit and Medline databases for articles published in the years 1960 through June of 2004, pairing the term cancer with benefit finding, posttraumatic growth, and positive change. The authors also examined the reference lists of articles generated from this search for additional relevant citations, in addition to contacting researchers who recently had published on the topic for relevant papers. Studies were included that involved assessment of individuals with a cancer diagnosis and the authors allowed the possibility of reporting positive consequences or changes arising from the cancer experience.
