My mission as an EOD tech was to primarily take care of explosive hazards—of which there were plenty. They basically pay you to jump out of airplanes, go diving, shoot guns, blow stuff up—everything that every 13-year-old boy thinks of as the pinnacle of what his life could be—is that.
October 1st, 2011, I got blown up. And that was with an IED that I had rolled over in an unarmored vehicle, in a side-by car.
When I came back from Afghanistan, getting my medical disability and ratings and everything, I specifically was like, “No, I don’t have PTS.” Looking back after 11 and a half years, I’m learning that the trauma that even just I experienced had more layers than I expected. Because I could only deal with what my bandwidth would allow me to do at that given time.
I wanted to go through the PATHH program. It’s not therapy. It’s training. It’s training on how to deal with struggle in life.
You need tools and techniques to improve yourself, to improve your situation. I gained a tremendous amount of emotional intelligence that I did not have in any way, shape, or form before that.
